The Jonquil City has been rebuilding itself for twenty years, and it shows on every street. Original 1950s and 1960s brick ranches in Cheney Woods, Bennett Woods and Smyrna Heights sit next to tall new construction on fiber cement, and around Vinings Estates and the Market Village you get stucco and painted trim on homes barely old enough to need a second coat. What they share is exposure. Smyrna sits on the west side of the metro with long afternoon sun on unshaded elevations, heavy pollen in spring, and enough winter freeze and thaw to open hairline cracks in stucco and mortar joints. Chalking and fading follow, usually well before the paint has earned its keep. Ceramic behaves differently under that kind of sun. Rhino Shield is applied at 10 to 12 mils minimum, the equivalent of eight to ten coats of paint, and it holds its bond and its give instead of chipping or peeling off a hot south wall. It carries a transferable 25-year warranty rather than another three to five year repaint clock.
