Two housing stocks meet in Fayetteville. Around the old courthouse square are frame houses and early brick homes whose painted trim has been redone many times over, and out along Highways 85 and 54 are the subdivisions that filled Fayette County from the 1980s onward, mostly painted brick with wood or fiber cement trim and gable ends. All of it takes the same beating: spring pollen that clings to a chalky finish, humid summers, and enough winter freeze-thaw to open the joints at trim and mortar. Sealing those joints takes material, not another thin coat.
